After a 3-week-long break back home with their families, the Young Bakers are back to Shanghai and full of energy to start the second semester!

While reading the words written by the SYB graduates, we realize that experience in SYB is not only about learning how to bake traditional French bread, but much more. It is an amazing feeling to see that within 11 months only, the SYB program has transformed their lives on a professional but also on a personal basis. Coming from different provinces from all around China, the Young Bakers have very different background and life experiences, but all have the same goal: to come out of the poverty cycle and gain financial independence to sustain themselves and their families.

These 11 months go extremely fast as the Young Bakers have a very tight schedule: between theorical and pratical classes, outings and bakery related activities, and their internship at our partner hotels. At SYB, we try to ensure that they make the most out of this period of time, which will be a great base to start in their “new” life.

The way to graduation can have a lot of obstacles and many difficulties to overcome, which in the end make them (and all of us) grow as persons. Indeed, they will learn how to communicate in society and in a professional manner, how to interact with their colleagues and deal with different situations, how to apply for a job, write a resume… All these “soft skills” which are for us, just as important as the technical training because it will help them having better tools to life decisions in the future.

And this can only happen with the support of professionals, who dedicate their time to share their knowledge with the Young Bakers throughout the year. Thus, I would like to give a warm thanks to all of the volunteers, who support SYB through different ways, you are so important to us!

Because at SYB, our mission is much more than teaching them how to bake and we hope to keep transforming the lives of the disadvantaged Chinese youth thanks to your support!

And because it is more than teaching them how to bake, Let’s wish the Young Bakers a great start of this new semester and lot of learning ahead!
