Jiuqian students learn about baking, charity and future opportunities with SYB!
On May 17, 2015, for the second year in a row, Shanghai Young Bakers hosted a special baking class for Jiuqian Volunteer Center featuring multi-layer mocha cakes. Jiuqian helps underprivileged children develop valuable life skills through participating in music classes and other after school activities.
The two organizations’ history of cooperation made the class even more meaningful. Every year SYB accepts 30 new students, each of whom is recommended by another NGO. In the past, Jiuqian has recommended a handful of students who successfully graduated from SYB’s one-year French bakery program. These students were able to help during the baking class, uniting generations of potential Jiuqian-recommended future bakers!
The 25 total class participants (19 students ages 7-13, plus 6 parents) all put their own creative twist on SYB’s traditional mocha cake recipe. When the time came to decorate the cakes, students reached for the leftover bananas from lunch, placing the slices on top of the cakes in different shapes and designs.
After a fun and rewarding day of baking, Shanghai Young Bakers is looking forward to future cooperation with Jiuqian Volunteer Center!
