July 25th: SYB students visit BWB (Braille without borders) in Lhasa
On July 25th, Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) students were honored to visit the school of BWB (Braille without Borders) in Lhasa, led by BWB administrators Nyima and Gyentsen. Visually impaired kids are split between the mouse class, the tiger class and the rabbit class, where they study Mandarin, Tibetan, English and basic life skills. Once these studies completed, they are able to attend regular schools.
During the visit, Gyentsen showed us how to use a computer, a cellphone as well as a typewriter in Braille, which was very impressive. Zhao Xueyan, one of SYB graduate students said: “what I learn from them is that I should never lose hope in life.”
Nyima and Gyentsen, also visually impaired, were among the first students at BWB. After graduating, now fluent in Mandarin and English, they chose to join the BWB staff so that to give back to the organization, just like the bakery teachers of SYB!
