On 14th December 2016, Shanghai Young Bakers was proud to be invited to Bangkok, to participate in the first annual meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Social Enterprises for Training in Hospitality & Catering (ASSET-H&C).

Based in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or Thailand, the nine association members are all training centres who leverage the strong growth of tourism and ensuing demand for qualified hospitality and catering practitioners, to lift local disadvantaged youth out of poverty.

Despite the many differences, it’s the similarities between these organisations and Shanghai Young Bakers, that made the exchanges and experience fascinating. Their operating business model vary from one organisation to the next, and from SYB’s, and the economic and regulatory environment they evolve in is very different from China’s. But we all share the same attention to labour market demands, the same will to develop high-quality trainings that deliver true qualifications, the same social commitment to providing opportunities to those who need it the most, and very often, the same challenges in advancing innovative programs, and in finding and building the right partnerships that will make a lasting difference.

As we were invited specifically to share our experience in designing and developing commercial services for industry professionals (technical consulting, professional training…), much of the discussion turned to our strengths, and weaknesses, and necessity to better communicate on our expertise.

The conference also brought the unique opportunity to meet with the person, who, unknowingly, was at the start of the Shanghai Young Bakers adventure.

In 2006, a young Shanghai expat named Francois-Xavier Kobilinsky travelled to Vietnam on holiday, and was impressed by the bread he bought at the Boulangerie de Hue, a social bakery designed to empower orphans by teaching them baking skills, set up by friends of his. Back in Shanghai, he gathered a few other friends to set up and develop a similar project with him in China: this is the story of how Shanghai Young Bakers was born.

Fast forward to ten years later, and the Co-Founder of the Boulangerie de Hue, Thomas Behagel, and Director of now firmly established Shanghai Young Bakers, Cecile Cavoizy, finally meet, in Bangkok as part of a social entrepreneurship conference. It was an amazing experience to compare notes, relate evolutions, and share dreams and plans for the years ahead.

As we work on building a network of like-minded organisations, we allow social needs and market opportunities to create a better future in the whole region.
