Baking in China:”Lesaffre and SYB Help Develop Bakery-Related Charity Cause Together”
On Tuesday 13th May 2014, the French Minister of Agriculture Mr. Le Foll makes a stop on his official China tour to visit the International Trade Fair Bakery China that takes place in Shanghai from May 13th to May 16th.
Lesaffre Greater China CEO Jean de Lataillade proudly welcomes the Minister on his booth for the signature of a partnership agreement with the charity program Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB). Not only will this contract renew past cooperation between both organizations, it will also include special trainings that are to be given by Lesaffre and SYB’s teachers to employees of companies such as Carrefour China.
Founded in 2008, Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) is a charity program providing a fully-sponsored French bakery training to disadvantaged Chinese youth (aged 17-23), enabling them to find qualified jobs and lead independent lives after graduation.
During the one-year training, SYB students follow classes in traditional Western bakery, life skills and English, combined with a practical internship at international hotels.
Sponsored by Carrefour Foundation as well as Accor Foundation and other companies, this social innovation program is managed by a dynamic multicultural team, and operates under the governance of Chi Heng Foundation with the support of the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
«Signing this new contract will enable us to strengthen our partnership with Lesaffre and improve the quality of our training» says Floriane Lemoine, project manager at SYB. SYB has been training underprivileged Chinese in the skills of traditional French bakery since 2009. Under Carrefour Foundation’s impulse, who has sponsored the program since its beginnings, many French food and hospitality companies in Shanghai have since come together to lend a professional hand to this innovative program, allowing almost 100 young people from all over China to discover the French know-how and have access to jobs in Shanghai’s growing bakery market.
According to Jean de Lataillade, this partnership will enable Lesaffre to « share a most needed knowledge and actively contribute to the development of the bread industry in China. It is fully in line with the commitment of Lesaffre: to innovate with confidence in order to feed and protect the planet more effectively». Setting the global standard for yeast and other fermentation products, Lesaffre has been a strong partner of SYB since the inception of the program. The content of SYB training was developed thanks to the support of the baking experts of Lesaffre, who taught the three first batches of SYB students. Lesaffre has then continued to support SYB through in-kind and financial sponsorship, and by sharing its expertise with SYB bakery teachers.
During his speech, the French Minister of Agriculture emphasized the importance of trainings for the development of the food industry, and concluded by saying “I hope that initiatives such as this partnership between Lesaffre and Shanghai Young Bakers will multiply like bread!”
In this year marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and the People’s Republic of China, such a cooperation reflects the many achievements that both countries have now made as well as both nations’ wish to share what is best in each other’s culture.
