The 10th batch of Young Bakers started its training in early September and has since been on an intensive schedule. Learning the fundamentals of traditional French bakery and pastry surely requires time and attention!
To ensure high quality training, students received practical and theoretical training in bakery and pastry, as well as thematic trainings related to food safety and hygiene, among others. We also organized outings, during which students discovered Shanghai and its outreach.
Additionally, students have been learning English thanks to our partners NGO, Stepping Stones’ amazing volunteer team. The Young Bakers have been learning the basic language skills needed to engage in simple daily conversations and talk about bakery ingredients, tools and equipment. These elementary skills will enable students to adapt to the 5-star hotel working environment in which they will soon be interning. We are grateful for Stepping Stones’ efforts in developing a curriculum, which fits the Young Bakers’ specific needs.
For the second year in a row SYB is partnering with Li Xiaowen and her students from China Normal East University, who have developed a specific life skills training for the Young Bakers. Through a variety of activities and topics, students will develop soft skills every week, which will bolster their self-confidence and help them become young responsible adults, capable of dealing with adversities.
For the past 10 years, Shanghai Young Bakers has constantly improved its program’s quality and expertise. We are honoured to be recognized as one of China’s best French Bakery schools and still rejoice over the students’ pride and hopes brought about by baking their first bread!
Each week, you can also take on sustainable actions by ordering the students’ products for your home or office. This is a great way to support our program while enjoying French breads and pastries.
We are really happy to count on social-minded individuals and companies wishing to contribute to our program. We also always welcome new partners that can participate in helping us train more marginalized Chinese youth!
