The students of Shanghai Young Bakers come from many parts of China. With no prior knowledge of French bakery, they learn from the ground up while striving to adapt to life and work in Shanghai. Over their year of training, they face many difficulties and undergo many positive personal changes.
Since its establishment in 2009, SYB has graduated over 200 students and has been there to guide and support them on their journey of personal and professional growth. There’s a real spirit of camaraderie among SYB’s graduates. Perhaps it’s because they have all experienced similar hardships and understand how tough the road has been. It is truly commendable, regardless of whether it is in work or in life, they support each other and are there for each other, always.
After graduation, many students maintain a close relationship with SYB, staying in touch and keeping up-to-date on its development. Frequently, graduates will call to ask how they can contribute their time and energy to SYB. They never ask for compensation and as SYB alumni, they feel it is their duty to give back. We at SYB, are moved by their desire and willingness to remain involved but always explain that their time and energy are valuable and must be compensated.
SYB is often shorthanded, especially after setting up our social enterprise. To overcome this recurring challenge, we selected 7 alumni who work in Shanghai and expressed a willingness to help the school develop. With them, SYB established long-term stable working relationships under which they assist our social enterprise to carry out its commercial activities.
Our social enterprise technical team is composed of SYB teachers and alumni. All teachers have completed a year of accredited study in France. SYB alumni, guided through their studies by our teachers, possess specialized skills, have real work experience, and are diligent and conscientious. A team like this is truly a valuable asset. With their participation, SYB’s social enterprise can do high-quality work while developing a range of commercial activities. The graduate students’ enthusiasm for the job is not diminished by the fact that they could earn more working elsewhere.
Each year SYB turns out a new batch of well-trained, freshly-minted young bakers. Among them, there are always an enthusiastic few who take the initiative to apply for work with our social enterprise. Their desire to give of themselves to help SYB’s program is very gratifying to teachers and staff. Our social enterprise with SYB alumni are working together to facilitate its growth and development and to build a reserve of strength for the future.
