French Cake, Chinese Kings
If you’re a loyal reader of our articles, or if you have French friends around you, you might have noticed that we are talking a lot about King’s Cakes these days…
If you do not know what a King’s Cake is or what it has to do with January, no worries. You can check Wikipedia, or better: read our article to know more about it!
… But do you know the ritual? Do you know the proper way to eat a King’s Cake?
If you’re French, or if you know the French culture well, you sure do. Yet, keep reading, because you might find something for you guys below…
I think I have found the best opportunity of the year to show you how to eat a King’s Cake: SYB’s Annual Party!
On January 7th was gathered the whole SYB team! And, of course, all the students were there as well! What would SYB be without them?
On that day, all of us, no matter our nationality, background, gender or age, we did not only share a King’s Cake, we also shared a part of the Shanghai Young Bakers’ spirit.
So, let me explain you this French ritual:
1. Choose the youngest person around the table, and make him/her sit under it!
As we were a lot (44!), we have decided to have both the youngest of the students and the youngest of the team, sitting together under the table!
2. Then, ask the oldest person to cut a slice, and ask the youngest: “For whom is this one?”.
3. Then the youngest answers with the name of someone around the table, who gets the slice.
4. Repeat until everyone is served!
5. Inside the cakes are hidden small beans called fèves… If you find one, you are the King or the Queen! You therefore deserve a crown!
6. Long Live the King! Long Live the Queen! (In our King’s Cake, we had hidden six fèves, one is still to be discovered…)
Aaaand…That’s it! Now you know how to eat a King’s Cake!

No? Don’t worry, SYB has decided to give you a chance to learn!
SYB organizes a Public Class on January 19th, from 10 AM to 3 PM, at our Baking Centre! There, our teacher Liu Dong will teach you how to bake a King’s Cake! This class will be open to everyone, even to beginners, even to kids from 8 years old (kids aged 8-12 need to be accompanied by an adult)! Our Public Class costs 600 RMB per person (lunch included), 500 RMB per person if more than 10 people register, and we make it half-price for kids from 8 to 12!
