Sharing is Growing
Every time I engage in a discussion about Shanghai Young Bakers, the question “What is your biggest challenge?” invariably comes up. We face challenges indeed, and who wouldn’t when you commit to train underprivileged youth for free to such a demanding job as being a baker. However when I look back at 2013 what strikes me the most is not our challenges, but the increasing number of individuals or companies who step forward to offer their support by sharing their resources.
SYB wouldn’t have been created without the support of Carrefour Foundation, the expertise ofLesaffre and the educational support of our partner baking school EFBPA. The Young Bakers would have a hard time learning traditional French bakery and pastry without the ingredients provided by partners such as Grands Moulins de Paris, Lactalis or Sinodis. They couldn’t apply these skills in a professional environment without the support of luxury hotels such as Accor group, and would find these internships even more challenging if they didn’t have English classes from Stepping Stones as well as life skills classes.
There are many other partners who have chosen to share because they care about our cause, and believe in empowerment through vocational training. They share our conviction that by revealing the potential of these underprivileged youth their resources will be multiplied and have a deep, long-lasting impact. The best reward is to see the Young Bakers share in return their unique know-how, just like they did with the students from Institut Paul Bocuse this month.
The Young Bakers celebrated Christmas by cooking and sharing a meal together, they join me in thanking you for your trust, and wish you many wonderful shared moments for 2014!
