Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) provides a fully-sponsored French bakery training to disadvantaged Chinese youth (aged 17-23), enabling them to find qualified jobs and lead independent lives after graduation.
Launched in February 2009, SYB’s one-year training combines intensive classes in French bakery, with practical internships at partner companies (Carrefour, Hyatt on the Bund, Grand Hyatt, Grand Mercure, JW Mariott, Mariott Changfeng, Millenium Hongqiao, Peninsula, Radisson Hongquan, Royal Meridien, Waldorf Astoria...). After completing the programme, the 22 students can then obtain employment opportunities in bakery shops or hotels in Shanghai and all across China.
Sponsored by Carrefour International Foundation and French yeast producer Lesaffre, SYB answers charities’ needs as well as the skills shortage in the bakery job market, through a CSR-oriented network of partnerships with associations, corporations and schools.
This social innovation programme is managed by a dynamic international team, and operates under the governance of Chi Heng Foundation with the support of the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
Half-day bakery classes, social teambuilding events, and bread & pastry catering are available to individuals and companies wishing to contribute to the success and sustainability of the programme.
